Populations Health Outcomes Research

Vitalus team of experts led and worked in partnership with various academic institutions (Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and School of Medicine and Harvard University School of Medicine) to design epidemiological studies to characterize and understand the disproportionate burden of disease affecting the vulnerable and disadvantaged populations in the US and internationally.

Lot Quality Assurance Sampling to Mobilize, Equip and Train Youth about HIV:

(USAID-PEPFAR #420-2066, IO#: 90021340): 

This award was a 5-year multi-country population-based HIV study to measure prevalence of HIV and population health indicators in Mozambique, Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia.  Vitalus led the implementation of data-driven interventions and assess impact HIV prevention interventions among youths 18 to 30 year of age.

  • Conducted large population based cluster survey to assess baseline HIV health indicators in each country Implemented and trained local staff on LQAS survey methodology data collection
  • Trained local staff on LQAS data analysis and how to use data finding set benchmarks and to make decisions about allocation of services and management decision to meet benchmarks
  • Supported each country in annual reports to USAID

HIV Surveillance Afghanistan HIV/AHDS Prevention Project:

(World Bank-AFG/MOPH/HIV/002): 

Vitalus conducted population-based surveys to measure prevalence of HIV/HBV/HCV/syphilis and key health indicators to guide HIV interventions among high-risk populations (injection drug users, sex workers, transportation workers). Vitalus directed, and managed data collection in 6

cities in Afghanistan.  

  • Conducted qualitative data collection knowledge, attitudes and beliefs among policy-makers and community influencer to understand the factors that drive decision-making regarding HIV policy in the country overall HIV/HBV/HCV
  • Conducted quantitative data that was collected among five HIV high-risk groups for the Integrated Biological and Behavioral Survey (IBBS) surveillance system to determine the disease prevalence and to assess knowledge regarding awareness, modes of disease transmission, and modes of protection against HIV/HBV/HCV/syphilis among the most at risk populations
  • Provide links to medical care to HIV/HBV/HCV patients diagnosed from our surveillance program 
  • Results of research were used to guide Afghan Ministry of Health to develop targeted interventions towards high-risk populations to reduce HIV/HBV/HCV.
